Life has a funny way of leading us to unexpected treasures. When we accepted a workamping position at a private marina on the Patuxent River, I'll admit – Southern Maryland wasn't exactly on my photography bucket list. But sometimes the best discoveries come from these unplanned adventures.
The marina, tucked away along the Patuxent's peaceful waters, turned out to be a photographer's paradise, especially for someone who sees the world through an infrared lens. Between work shifts, I found myself drawn to the docks, where the interplay of water, sky, and maritime life created an endless canvas of possibilities.
There's something mesmerizing about a marina in infrared. The way sunlight dances off the water takes on an otherworldly quality, while the boats stand as silent sentinels against a dreamlike backdrop. Each walk along the weathered planks of the dock revealed new perspectives: morning mist rising from the river, sailboats gently swaying in their slips, seabirds diving for their breakfast.
What started as a simple work assignment transformed into an artistic exploration of maritime life. The Patuxent River, with its rich history and vibrant ecosystem, proved that sometimes the most compelling subjects are found in places we least expect. These images capture not just the physical beauty of the marina, but the peaceful rhythm of life on the water.
For those interested in seeing more of this hidden corner of Maryland, I've put together a video available on both Rumble and YouTube, and you can find the complete collection in our Nautical gallery. Each image tells a story of discovery, reminding us that beauty often lies in the unexpected detours of life.
