Infrared photography is a fascinating technique that captures light beyond the visible spectrum, offering a unique perspective on the world. Unlike traditional photography, which records visible light, infrared photography focuses on wavelengths typically ranging from 700 nm to 900 nm. This allows photographers to explore a realm of light that is invisible to the human eye, revealing hidden details and transforming ordinary scenes into extraordinary works of art.

Captured in the serene Indian Lake State Forest near Ocala, Florida, "Solitary Trails: Oak Hangover" is a testament to the unique beauty of infrared photography. This image was taken at 590nm, a wavelength often referred to as "Super Color," which brings out vibrant and unexpected hues.

The first image showcases the raw capture straight from the camera, highlighting the initial beauty and potential of infrared photography. The second image is a cropped and edited version, where I've applied my personal touch through post-processing to enhance and refine the scene.

What I love most about infrared photography is its deeply personal nature. There's no definitive way it should look, allowing for endless creativity in post-processing. This freedom makes post-processing my favorite aspect of working with infrared, as it lets me explore and express the unseen beauty of the world in my own unique way.


To capture infrared images, photographers use specially modified cameras or infrared filters. A standard digital camera's sensor is sensitive to infrared light, but it typically includes an infrared-blocking filter. By removing this filter or using an external infrared filter, photographers can capture the desired wavelengths.

Modified Cameras:

These cameras have their infrared-blocking filter removed and replaced with an infrared-pass filter, allowing only infrared light to reach the sensor

Infrared Filters:

These are placed over the camera lens to block visible light while allowing infrared light to pass through. This method is more accessible but requires longer exposure times.

The images above from Kolari Vision illustrate the conversion process of a Nikon Z7ii, the same camera I use for my infrared photography. While there are several companies offering conversion services, I was particularly impressed with the quality and precision of Kolari's work. Their expertise ensured a seamless transition, allowing me to capture the vibrant and unique world of infrared with confidence.

IR Chrome

The IR Chrome filter mimics the look of Aerochrome film, producing vibrant reds and blues. It’s designed to replicate the classic color infrared film look, offering a unique and nostalgic aesthetic.

850nm

The 850nm filter blocks all visible light, capturing only infrared wavelengths. This results in monochromatic images with high contrast, emphasizing textures and details, perfect for black-and-white infrared photography.

Post Processing

Above are examples showcasing images before and after applying infrared filters. Infrared images often require post-processing to achieve the desired artistic effect. This includes adjusting white balance, contrast, and color channels to enhance the unique qualities of infrared light. Software like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop are commonly used to fine-tune these images, bringing out the ethereal and dreamlike qualities that define infrared photography.
