Some places stay with you long after you've left.
The San Francisco de Asís Mission Church in Taos had been on my photography bucket list for years. Like many photographers, I admired the work Ansel Adams created here—but when I finally stood before the church, I wasn't searching for his photograph. I wanted to discover my own.
Walking around the mission, this perspective immediately stopped me. The massive adobe walls, repeating crosses, and deep shadows gave the church a quiet strength that invisible light revealed even more clearly. Rather than recording a landmark, I wanted to capture the timeless feeling of standing there.
Elegy in Shadow and Spice
Some photographs find you when you're not looking for them.
Tracey and I were wandering through the historic plaza in Santa Fe when I glanced down a quiet covered passageway. Hanging in the shadows was a traditional ristra of dried New Mexico chilis.
Most people photograph them for their vibrant red color.
I wanted to see something else.
Invisible light stripped away the color and revealed something unexpected. The chilis became sculpture—every wrinkle, fold, and curve transformed into a study of texture, time, and craftsmanship.
Sometimes removing color reveals what was there all along.
Wishing Leaves
Some images ask questions instead of giving answers.
I found these leaves at Tims Ford State Park in Tennessee—the small one resting against the larger, as if they belonged together. Maybe it wished it were bigger. Or maybe they were simply two friends, making one last journey after falling from the tree.
I don't know which story is true. I don't think it matters. Every viewer brings their own story to an image.
Sometimes the simplest moments leave the deepest impression.
Halo of Fronds
Some of my favorite photographs happen when I'm not looking for one at all.
Tracey, Cooper, and I were walking the waterfront park in St. Marys, Georgia, when a lone palm tree caught my eye—the pavilion beside it seemed to point right toward it. As I moved into position, the sun slipped behind the canopy, bursting through the fronds in a radiant halo that lasted only seconds.
Working in invisible light turned this familiar coastal scene into something timeless—a reminder that nature's most beautiful moments aren't created. They're discovered by those willing to slow down and notice.
Luminous Spirits
While exploring the quiet waterways of Caddo Lake, one cypress tree seemed to glow from within. Draped in Spanish moss and surrounded by dark water, it felt less like a tree and more like a silent guardian watching over the swamp.
Invisible light transformed the moss into flowing strands of silver, revealing what ordinary vision often misses. Against the dark forest, the luminous branches felt both peaceful and mysterious.
Some places hold a spirit all their own—waiting for someone willing to slow down and notice.
Monument of Serenity

While walking through Tims Ford State Park, a single leaf resting on an old railroad tie caught my attention. The contrast between something so delicate and something so weathered created a quiet moment I couldn't ignore.
