Beyond What Your Eyes Can See: The Art of Invisible Light

When people ask me about infrared photography at art fairs, I've found a simple way to explain it that works. Most photographers who capture IR think my explanation is too simplistic, but it helps people actually grasp the concept without getting overwhelmed by the technical side.

Imagine a rainbow lying on its side. Each color represents a different wavelength of light, measured in nanometers. At one end lies ultraviolet light, at the other, infrared. Your eyes can only see a tiny slice in the middle – what we call "visible light." But there's an entire world of beauty hiding just beyond our natural vision.

Every camera, even your smartphone, can actually capture this invisible infrared light. But manufacturers install filters to block it out because, frankly, it makes post-processing complicated. I had that filter removed.

With a clear filter in its place, I can now choose exactly which wavelength of invisible light to capture by placing different filters on my lens. Each wavelength reveals the world in a completely different way – like having multiple sets of magical eyes.

More Than Technology – A Creative Tool

While there are certainly more technical explanations for capturing infrared light, I consider it simply another tool in my creative toolkit. Just as a painter chooses different brushes or a musician selects different instruments, I choose different wavelengths to express the emotions and stories I see in each landscape.

470nm - Purple Majesty

At 470nm, stepping into this purple-hued realm feels like discovering a secret world that's been hiding in plain sight. The familiar becomes fantastical – that tree you've passed a thousand times now glows with an inner light, the sky pulses with colors that stir something deep in your soul, and suddenly you're not just looking at a photograph, you're peering through a window into dreams made visible.

590nm a swappable world

At 590nm - The Swappable Realm, we enter a world where nature plays tricks with reality itself. Something truly fascinating happens here – everything your eyes see as green appears blue through the camera's invisible vision, while everything blue transforms into rich, warm reds. It's as if the world has been secretly wearing a disguise all along, and infrared light becomes the key to revealing its true colors. A simple channel swap in Photoshop pulls back this cosmic curtain, unveiling a hidden palette that was dancing just beyond our perception – emerald forests become sapphire seas, azure skies blush crimson, and suddenly you're seeing the same landscape through the eyes of another dimension.

At 720nm - The Ethereal Realm, we venture further from visible light into a space that exists between worlds. Here, the landscape is washed in muted, ethereal blue hues that feel both familiar and alien, like memories of a place you've never been. It's as if we're seeing through the eyes of twilight itself – everything takes on a soft, dreamlike quality where shadows hold secrets and light whispers rather than shouts.
