Monument of Serenity and Shadows
“Monument of Serenity and Shadows” invites you into a place where light and darkness feel like equal partners—each revealing something the other cannot. Captured in infrared black and white, this image features the San Francisco de Asís Catholic Mission Church in Taos, New Mexico, rendered with an otherworldly clarity that turns familiar forms into something timeless.
In the foreground, a traditional archway crowned with a solitary cross becomes a threshold—an entrance not just into the scene, but into a quieter state of mind. The arch draws the eye inward, framing the mission beyond it and setting a tone of reverence and stillness.
Past the arch, the church’s twin bell towers rise with solemn presence, each marked with a cross—echoes of faith repeating against the stark New Mexico sky. A large tree stretches behind the mission, its branches widening the composition and softening the geometry with a living, watchful calm.
This photograph is also deeply personal for me. One of my favorite photographers, Ansel Adams, famously photographed this very mission, and standing here with my own camera felt like stepping into a lineage—an artistic conversation across time. In this image, past and present meet: adobe, stone, wood, and desert air woven together into a single moment where serenity is inseparable from the shadows of history.
Printed to museum-quality standards and available in multiple sizes and premium materials (paper, canvas, metal, acrylic, and more depending on availability). If you’d like a different size, finish, or framing option, reach out and I’ll help you customize the perfect piece for your space. Contact Dan
