Near the Grand Teton Mountains, I found a landscape that felt like the American West distilled to its essentials. A small home and a solitary tree stood quietly in the open meadow, with the snow-dusted peaks rising behind them beneath a sky heavy with gathering weather.

Tracey and I were driving with no destination in Grand Teton National Park when the light did something worth stopping for. Walking through the gardens in Saint Marys, Georgia with my wife, I noticed a palm rising alone against the sky — then the sun slid directly behind it, and the ordinary tree became something else.
