The first time we stayed at Cold Beer NM, a bar and restaurant near Maxwell, New Mexico, it felt like one of those unexpected places that becomes part of the journey. We returned several times through Harvest Hosts, enjoying the food, the welcome, and the wide-open landscape surrounding the property. From there, the view toward Maxwell stretched across the high plains beneath an immense New Mexico sky.
In Long Black Road, a dark highway curves through the pale grasses and disappears toward the horizon. Captured in black-and-white infrared, the land takes on an almost luminous quality while the sky gathers into deep, dramatic shadow. What might have been an ordinary road becomes something quieter and more mysterious—a line leading through distance, memory, and possibility.
I don’t see this landscape as empty. I see it as open. There is room here to slow down, to look farther, and to feel the strange freedom of being somewhere with no need to hurry. This photograph holds a small part of what I love about traveling through the American West: the way a familiar road can become a doorway into another state of mind.
