The adobe walls, desert air, and stark sky carried a sense of age and quiet devotion—something shaped by weather, faith, and the passage of many generations.
In Monument of Serenity and Shadows, a traditional archway topped with a solitary cross frames the church beyond it. The arch becomes more than part of the architecture; it feels like a threshold, drawing the eye inward and inviting a slower kind of attention. Beyond it, the church’s bell towers rise against the open New Mexico sky, while the broad branches of a nearby tree soften the stronger lines of the structure.
Captured in infrared black and white, the familiar landscape takes on an unusual clarity. Light gathers across the adobe and surrounding forms, while the shadows deepen into something more contemplative. The image feels both grounded and slightly removed from ordinary time, as if the church is standing between the visible world and something older beneath it.
This photograph is especially meaningful to me because Ansel Adams, one of my favorite photographers, also photographed this church.
