Photographing the San Francisco de Asís Mission Church near Taos, New Mexico, was one of the memorable moments of our journey through the Southwest. The church has a quiet strength that is easy to feel before you begin to study its form—smooth adobe walls, softened edges, and a presence shaped by faith, weather, and time.
In Monumental Shadows in Time, I approached the church from a different angle, allowing the curved façade to fill the frame. Captured in black and white, the adobe becomes almost sculptural. Strong light moves across the rounded walls while deep shadows settle into every recess and imperfection, revealing the texture of a structure that has endured countless seasons.
What makes this place especially meaningful to me is its connection to Ansel Adams, one of my favorite photographers. Knowing that he had stood before this same church and made his own photograph there gave my visit the feeling of a quiet artistic pilgrimage. I wasn’t trying to recreate his image. I was responding to the same enduring subject through my own way of seeing.
The changing light gives the façade a sense of movement, as though the church is revealing a different memory with every passing moment. For me, this photograph is about endurance—not as something hard or imposing, but as the quiet strength of continuing to stand, weathered yet whole.
