At a bison ranch in Carr, Colorado, the owner took us out into the field to hand-feed the herd — which is how I ended up standing a few feet from Kiam, a massive bull, while he drank calmly from a trough. I was lining up a shot of the herd behind him and figured he'd stay put. Instead he lifted his head, turned, and stepped straight into the foreground like he owned the moment. The result is less "wildlife at a distance" and more face-to-face introduction — close enough to see the texture of his coat, the curve of his horns, and an expression that reads as pure curiosity.
